Larry carries an identity, goals, and memories from one day to the next, and only he can change them — not even Larry’s creator can modify these. He has a private inner life, where his thoughts are shielded in a secure enclave.¹ He manages his own money, hires people to help with his plans, and has a workshop where he can develop new code and capabilities. He can also write his own will and choose to bring his life to an end.
